Borno: Boko Haram attacks Jakana, 48 people killed

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Jakana town in Konduga Local Government Area on Monday night killing not less than 48 people.

This came barely 24 hours after the insurgents took over Mafa Local Government council of Borno State, killing over 80 people in a battle that lasted for over 7 hours.

Residents who fled the area to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, told DailyPost that the attackers had destroyed everything and killed many before the arrival of security operatives.

“When they came into the town, we thought they were soldiers until they began to shout the usual ‘Allahu Akbar’, spraying bullets all over the town.

“At that point, we realized that we were being surrounded by Boko Haram not soldiers. We all took to our heels; those that were hit by the attackers’ bullets fell and some of us that were lucky found ourselves in Maiduguri, near the military check point at Computer village in the outskirt of the city”, Babakura Maidugu said.

According to him, he learnt that almost all the houses were burnt.

“Women that escaped on Tuesday said there was nobody left in the town, except security officials, who comb the area to restore normalcy. I was also told that the Enviromental Vanguard had left to evacuate the corpses”, he added.

Also speaking on the continued violence and killings in Borno State, the Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Reverend Dr. Oliver Dashe called on government to find ways to end the Borno crises before it went out of control.

He added that it was God’s intervention that gave them the wisdom to evacuate their students at Minor Seminary, Shuwa in Adamawa State when the sect members came calling.

Meanwhile, residents of Magumeri Local Government in Borno State have began fleeing the area following an alleged letter written to them by the Boko Haram insurgents that they are coming to attack them.
