Police officer caught on camera extorting N25,000 from motorist dismissed

 

Chris Omeleze, a police sergeant who was caught on video camera extorting N25, 000 from a motorist; has been dismissed by the Lagos State Police Command.

The video footage of the yet to be identified male motorist, pleading with Omeleze to accept N2, 000 instead of the N25, 000 he demanded went viral on the blog-sphere earlier in the week.

The footage captured the policeman who was attached to the State Traffic Division, Ikeja, on the passenger’s seat; placing a call to his superior on the telephone, saying the car owner must be impounded for not ‘cooperating with him.’

The video, which trended heavily online, caught the attention of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, who ordered for his immediate arrest on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, ordered that the sergeant with Force number, 192954, should face an orderly room trial.

Omeleze was found guilty of misconduct by a panel of policemen who recommended him for dismissal with immediate effect.

The officer who was given a dressing down at the CP’s office on Wednesday said he regretted his action, lamenting that he had been in service for almost 21 years.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide who expressed disappointment over the sergeant’s unprofessional behaviour called on members of the public to always report such cases to the police.

Her words, “The video was well detailed and we were able to locate the sergeant. The video was enough evidence and after facing an orderly room trial, he was dismissed.

“The police will not condone such behaviour and members of the public are advised to always report such cases.”
