Ondo jailbreak: Group faults Police claim on rearrested inmates

Ondo Awareness Security Network,OASN, has questioned the claims by the Ondo State Police Command that 54 inmates of the Olokuta Medium Security Prisons in Akure , who escaped during a jailbreak in the state, were rearrested on Monday.

Gunmen numbering about 30 had on Sunday invaded the Olokuta Medium Security Prisons, freeing 175 inmates after using explosives to destroy the wall of the prison yard.

In a statement on Wednesday, OASN Chairman, Sola Odundun, stated that the state Police Command was only “trying to impress the Inspector General of Police over the prison attack by claiming that some of the fleeing criminals were rearrested.

The statement said that it’s a “total falsehood as we believe only a few of the prisoners who are still loitering around the prison yard were taken back into their cells, and not any of the fleeing criminals.

“We believe this is the correct situation on ground as at today (Wednesday) since neither the police nor the prison authority has further recorded any success since the break.

The group urged the Inspector General of Police and his counterpart in the Prison Services to investigate the incident and set up a special search team on the trail of the fleeing criminals.

OASN blamed the attack on security lapses, saying the Command should parade the arrested criminals before newsmen to prove their claim.

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, Wole Ogodo, said on Wednesday that no further arrest had been made since the last announcement, adding that search operation was still ongoing.
