Akure prison break: Health workers protest soldier attack on a senior nurse

Pandemonium broke today in Akure, the Ondo State Capital following a protest staged by the health workers of the State Specialist Hospital over alleged attack on a senior nurse by a soldier.

The health workers under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives staged the peaceful protest to register their displeasure over the conduct of the soldier, which they described as barbaric.

One of them, a senior nursing officer identified as Adeyemi Adeniyi was this week attacked by a soldier who accompanied one of his colleagues that was shot in the Sunday’s jail break at the Olokuta Medium Prison in Akure to the hospital.

The soldier allegedly beat the woman during a squabble at the hospital.

The brutalized woman is currently admitted at the intensive care unit of
the state specialist hospital.

Armed with placards with various inscriptions, members of the union urged the Chief of Army Staff to ensure that the soldier gets disciplined.

The State Chairman of the union, Abel Oloniyo described the attack on the nurse as uncalled for, stressing that the soldier must not be allowed to go unpunished.

His words, “It is highly pathetic that a soldier will descend so low to beat a woman. His conduct is highly barbaric and uncalled for.

“All we are demanding for is that the soldier should be disciplined. We are ready to mobilize our members to the barracks if he is not punished”.

Oloniyo appealed to the management of the hospital to provide adequate security for health workers in all the hospitals in the state.
