Civil Defence suspends Lagos State Commandant over “My Oga at the top” comment

That serves him right,why would an officer in his rank respond to a question like that on social network for that matter,he’s a shame on him

This is unfair, what about the madam at the top (first lady)? Hers should be a movie not a song.

This isn’t fair, why on Earth would he be suspended afterall we all don’t get obvious things right all the time and we are not perfect either.
For those who make this a funny thing in social media, please we should be a bit more responsible. It has been made for a laugh at the begining but this is all what we caused for this fellow.

The Government should organize seminars for her top guys. Don’t be surprised that there are many of them that are not IT compliant. This does not mean that they are not competent. After all, not all bank account holders have ATM cards or even do internet banking!

If Christiana Amanpour had treated our President the way the TV journalists treated this poor Guy, will we have had to Impeach him to save face? However, this guy is also partly to blame for believing he could B.S his way through any question instead of being honest.

Yes, he could have said “he didn’t know”. However, on so many levels, that would not have helped. First, remember it’s the answer of a trained professional and the proof is in the pudding in that he isn’t trained like you might be in media interviewing. Also, the fact of the matter is we are a witch-hunting people, truth be told, so if one wants to find something to pick on, the next victim of our court of public opinion as it were, then even your statement would have caused equal outrage.

Who is to say his suspension stems from the fact he didn’t know the website to begin with? (Which is what you asked him to say!) The ‘oga-at-the-top’ is merely icing on the cake of embarrassment, and the incorrect/incomplete website cited, is merely proof of the fact he didn’t know it. Bear in mind the ChannelsTV staff are also highly untrained and unprepared people. In the Western world, TV hosts would even tell viewers the guests website, book name, tour dates, what-ever-it-may be etc. I notice hey do that on Silverbird too, so it’s not just Western. Never mind he should have known, what did they gain from embarrassing him? They certainly don’t seem clever to me! I bet if he quizzed them on basics of ChannelTV, right back, they too would have been stuttering and stammering for some answers. And more to the point, can you picture those same “professionals” letting him off the hook if he merely said, “I don’t know, I will get back to you?” — I can’t! I can picture you letting him off it, but certainly not them! That’s a wolf pack if I’ve seen one, just happen to be wearing suits!

On another frontier, what this reflects is how simplistically and myopically we think as a people. ESPECIALLY THE CIVIL SERVICE. I worked in it myself as a corper for a few months, so I know first hand! If it were me, who was in charge, I would have come out as DG of the organization to pardon him (bear in mind that ‘p’ word was used on Alams, who by the way isn’t getting half as much heat as this guy – and highlights the real issue about who Nigerians take frustrations out on – the petty thief in the market not the Babangida’s — we are so false and misplaced in our anger!). After pardoning him, use the global spotlight generated by the incident to enlighten people about what NSCDC does. Encourage people in the diaspora (who saw the viral link) to consider the recruitment exercise they are allegedly undertaking, and come back to build the organization. Also, while at it, ask the Federal Government for more funding to expand activities and programmes. Then, go on another circuit of television shows and interviews to generate proper awareness about what it does.

The DG himself, I can bet, didn’t know the website before this incident. As I said, I worked in the civil service in Nigeria, with people at the top, and I know why I say that. It’s the way of the wheel. However, everyone would now. So, he should encourage the civil servants nationwide to take pride in their organization, know basic details and call for investment in PR training for relevant staff across the service. Leadership, like life, is about making lemons with lemonade! Conversely, current leadership philosophy and practice is to, “thoroughly suspend that man.” Followed by a resounding hiss, and he awaits further false grilling from colleagues on return. Colleagues in Lagos he ought to be leading!

In the meantime, the man should not be made a scapegoat for the wider and deeper systemic ignorance in NSCDC and beyond! After, stepping away from the podium as DG, I’d give him the platform to make a speech to the public himself. I guess he would apologize and explain himself to you all. If that wasn’t enough to satisfy you, you or you, then we would have to wait until your own mistake-and-then-correction speech transpires to see how it should be done, and you can also wait to see how it will inevitably be criticized.
