Both teams began the game, well aware that Real Madrid had dropped points against Espanyol a few momente before, after a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu. So it was a chance for either of them to seize initiative.

Radamel Falcao, kept on his sensational scoring form with the opener in the 31st minute. The Colombian hitman raced past Busquets and lifted the ball expertly past Victor Valdes.

Adriano’s equaliser five minutes later, was a goal of top quality. The Brazilian cut in from the right and curled an exquisite shot past the keeper, to bring Barca level. They took the lead shortly before half time, after Busquets kept his composure and fired home.

Atletico tried to wrestle the game back in the second half, but it was Lionel Messi who had the final word. The 25-year-old curled in his first and dispossessed Diego Godin, before chipping past Courtois.
