Next Big Thing: “My music speaks for itself” – Jos-based rap sensation Kunem Slizzle

Kunem Slizzle is a young Nigerian rapper based in Jos, Nigeria. The Jos base rap artist had his first single released six years ago which featured another J-town Rapper Jerome Da Diplomat. He went on to do a remix with the award-winning Ice Prince.
WALE ODUNSI interviewed the artiste who is better described as the Next Big Thing from the ‘Home of Culture and Tourism’, after his recent performance in Abuja.

How did you discover your passion?

I’ve always had a connection with music since I was a child; my Dad had a huge collection of artistes from the 80′s which included Bonny M, Bob Marley, Abba and the likes. Also, I grew up around uncles that listened to hip-hop; this gradually influenced the kind of music I listened to. To crown it, the birthday present I received in 2004 was “The Eminem Show” album. The disk was literally on replay and that laid my foundation in hip-hop and ultimately my passion for music.

When did you start professionally?

I started writing songs from way back. Precisely since 2004 but the first record I made was in 2006 titled “So Fly” which featured J-town Rapper Jerome Da Diplomat, the song also had a Remix which featured Ice Prince.

Challenges faced pursuing your passion?

I’ll say the major challenge is the uncertain nature of it all. You put in a lot of work, time, effort and money and there is no real guarantee that it’ll pay off. Another thing is that it comes to a stage or level where you can no longer make music you love, instead you have to flow with the present trend if you want to get any recognition.

What makes your music unique?

My music is a perfect blend of international kind of hip-hop with a Nigerian flavour or undertone, making it distinct in a unique way. You’d understand better if you listen, my music speaks for itself.

What inspires you?

I’ll say life is the most inspiring aspect of my music because I try to bring out real life experiences and use these to write records.

Your mentors/role models?

Without doubt, it’s Marshall Matters and lately Drake Graham. Locally, Jude Abaga (MI), Terry Madaki (Terry Tha Rapman), Jesse Abaga (Jesse Jagz), Panshak Zamani (Ice Prince) amongst others.

Future plans?

Well I already have a Mixtape out titled “No Be Small Thaing”. You can get it online. I am presently recording tracks for my album under the R.S Music label, so you all would hear from me pretty soon.

What advice do you have for upcoming acts?

Honestly, music is not meant for everyone, that’s what some people have failed to realize. But if you truly have passion for music and you actually got skill, build up your self-belief, stay off drugs, and in all you do, put God first; He will surely see you through.
