Mpape residents cry out as FCTA begins demolition

The move by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA to demolish Mpape became a reality yesterday, when bulldozers, and combined team of security men stormed the area to commence the demolition of the satellite town. The FCTA had said it will demolish 10,288 houses in the area. These structures according to the authority were illegally erected.

The demolition began from the market where no single block was left standing. What used to be the busiest sight, has become a ghost ground.

Speaking with our correspondent who visited the area, shop owners lamented over the action of the government. According to one Mr. Isaac Agada ” majority of the people who sell in this market do nothing else but this business. Where do they go from here? Where is an alternative market. This cannot happen anywhere around the world. These government does not care about us at all.”

According to Omada Ogwuche, a stylist whose shop was pulled down by the FCTA bulldozers, ” this is senseless. How can any responsible government create more hardship for its people when it is fully aware that the citizens are struggling to survive?”

The road leading to Mpape was better avoided yesterday during the demolition as residents spent hours on the single lane to get to their homes due to hold-up.

Every attempt to speak with the demolishers proved abortive as they were not willing to speak on their action. However, sources have revealed that the FCTA acted based on the security report it was getting.

The Demolition of Mpape has recently become a subject of discussion in Abuja. Presently, the suit filled against the FCTA administration is being treated in court, yet the Mpape residents wondered why demolition could start without a verdict.

    Why is that sometimes Nigerian Government do not reason at all. For God sake where do they want theses people to go to? Besides they have not created jobs for them but yet they are destroying the little they have. This is totally inhuman and uncalled for. May God help Nigerians and Nigeria.
