Condolences pour in for the families of three Students Union leaders
A Human Rights Activist, Mr. Morakinyo Ogele and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Ondo State Chapter at the weekend commiserated with the families of the three Students Union Leaders of the State tertiary institutions who died in an accident on last Friday Night.
The three Student leaders who met there untimely death on there way back from Abuja where the State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko was honoured with National Association Nigerian Students (NANS) award, were Presidents of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Awopegba Oluwaseun, Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Akintola Abiodun and Ondo State School of Midwifery, Akure, Miss Oyikan Olotu.
Ogele, who is also the Senior Advocate of Nigeria Students (SANS) described the tragedy that befell the students community as a manifestation of a political class who are trying to dress themselves with a borrow robe.
He wondered why Abuja was choosen by the students union as the venue for such award, stressing that since the National body of the association is partnering with the State union level, Akure should have been a better place for such award.
He said “It is on record that some states governors are begging some pressure groups, students union and others to dress them in series of award ,when there people are suffering. if students in Ondo State in conjunction with its national body are bestowing an award on the State Governor, Abuja shouldn’t have been the best venue.
“Any of the student campus will have been a proper venue for such award. Few years, ago, I and former governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau was honoured by the Students body of University of Ado-Ekiti and the event was held in their campus. Not only this, when Femi Falana and I was honoured by the Students with the Senior Advocate of Nigerian Students awards, one of the campuses was used as the venue.
“I don’t know why the students union now preferred Abuja as the best area to honour Governor Mimiko. It is now clear that the award had been hashed because how can a Students body be hosting an event at Sheraton Hotel without money transaction between the Students body and Government. They must have spent a huge some of money on such award and their activities have been tele-guided.
“By the way, can the students body explained how they picked Governor Olusegun Mimiko as the best Governor in Nigeria? Are they not aware that a governor in the eastern part of the country, governor, Rochas Okorocha to be precise gave a free education to students in all levels. I think such governor would be a better candidate for such award not a governor who always struggle with the students before paying their scholarship and bursary allowances, not a governor who embarked on building mega schools which only cater for 10 percent students’ family”.
Also, the ACN alleged that the state government had played politics with the lives of the three young union leaders.
Speaking with newsmen in Akure, the Party State Youth Leader, Mr. Enas Mohammed wondered why the state governor preferred receiving awards while masses are suffering in the state.
Mohammed also said “the governor’s recent action had shown how the state governor is wasting the resources of the state which are met to the develop the state on awards. Though, we are sad that these young promising leaders met their untimely death on their way back from Abuja, but the questions that should be on our lips is that does the governor justified such award”.
“This government, in the last three and half years in office is yet to commission those roads he embarked upon, but preferred to waste billions of Naira on redressing Oba Adesida/Oyemekun road. Corruption had taken over the state, his interim council chairmen and aides are now visitors of ICPC and EFCC. He had also failed to conduct a local government polls whereby depriving the masses the opportunity to enjoy dividends of democracy.
The Youth leaders however urged the Nigerian Students, particuclarly students from Ondo State not to forement trouble but pray for their remaining leaders who escaped death but receiving treatment at Hospital
