Obasanjo failed Nigerians –Afenifere chieftain

Respected chieftain of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere and elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo has said that former president; Chief Olusegun did not keep to the promise he made in his acceptance speech of May 29, 1999 when he assumed office as the nation’s no. 1 citizen.

Adebanjo, said this at the weekend in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State during the 50th birthday celebration of the Managing Director of the Western Publishing Co. Ltd, Mr. Sina Kawonise. He said, “But as far back as inception of the current civilian (not democratic) regime from May 29, 1999, corruption has been prevalent. And one of the highlights of the acceptance speech of former President Olusegun Obasanjo when he was sworn in as president was his vow to wage a relentless war against corruption in all ramifications.

He pledged that it would no longer be business as usual. But we are all living witnesses to the high profile corruption cases that pervaded his eight years rule”.

Speaking further, Adebanjo noted that, “There were cases of ministers bribing legislators for budget and approval. What of the former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun’s episode? What has become of the National Identity Card scandal that was even taken to court for trial? It was indeed during the government of not “Business as usual” that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar N’abba displayed on the floor of the House Ghana must go bribe money from Obasanjo’s presidential villa.”

He observed that the war against corruption has been difficult because the government of the day is not ready to apprehend culprits, and that even when they are arrested, the perpetrators would never face the music.
