Workers and students in Jos Polytechnic, shun campus over bomb scare

Academic activities were paralyzed yesterday at the Plateau State Polytechnic at the Jos Campus, following a rumour that an unknown person planted a bomb at the ceiling of the BEPCO’s building in the institution.

The bomb was planted at the BEPCO block, the oldest building in the institution which has more than 30 classrooms and offices saw the institution’s authority calling the Police Anti-bomb squad to comb the building and ascertain that the area is safe for studies.

Workers of the polytechnic and Students vacated their classrooms and offices. They also send warning text messages to their colleagues not to come to the campus.

Speaking at the Campus, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Mr. Dauda Gyemang, assured students to return to their classrooms as the anti-bomb squad has certified the area safe.

The Rector said,” On many occasions, there had been occasions of theft at the ICT centre of the school and few laptops have been stolen. I think this case is no exception, someone was just trying to play pranks though nothing was stolen from the break-in. It is because nothing of value was seen in the building.”

He confirmed that students acted based on fear especially with the incident which occurred at the Christ Chosen Church of God on Sunday still fresh in the minds of the students.

Gyemang lamented the dearth of security personnel manning the institution but assured that he has written to the state government to request for more academic and security staff.
